An Open Letter to Barack Obama by Alice Walker

Dear Brother Obama,

You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us. Us being the black people of the Southern United States. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is a different place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and of the Americas. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

I would further advise you not to take on other people’s enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise. It is understood by all that you are commander in chief of the United States and are sworn to protect our beloved country; this we understand, completely. However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, “hate the sin, but love the sinner.” There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people’s spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.

A good model of how to “work with the enemy” internally is presented by the Dalai Lama, in his endless caretaking of his soul as he confronts the Chinese government that invaded Tibet. Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

In Peace and Joy,
Alice Walker

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES/ HAPPY FAMILY/ TIN FOIL HORSE

FUCK YEAH! The intenet is in love with me today!

Intuitive change
Intuitive appreciation and reflection of feeling, situations, choiches and changes

“…Sometimes situations and challenges become clearer when we look at them in a different way.
Conventional language and media often obscure more than they reveal.
Personal feelings and choices are sometimes better approached intuitively.
These wonderful abstracts by hypnotherapist Gloria May are designed to help this process.
You can use them in a variety of ways. Some suggestions are below.
Click on the images to download bigger versions of these thought-provoking abstracts.

1_Unintended Consequences / 2_Happy Family / 3_Willpower (is not always the best way to change, because it requires constant vigilance) / 4_Character Assassination

These images can be used in the facilitation of reflection, self-awareness, objectivity, improvement and development.

They can be used to prompt discussion and reaction, and they offer a different way to address certain issues and feelings that are often difficult to approach using conventional words and descriptions. The pictures can also be used with children and young people to discuss and explore what these concepts mean, and what the abstracts represent.

Or the pictures can be used simply for personal private contemplation…”

Kids drawings /Pictures/Seagulls

Filed under: art, dream — Lisa Paclet @ 4:12 am

In front of me lies a picture of the heads of the different G8 states. I’m drinking a coffee and a perrier at the same time. I still haven’t had time to sort out any Amsterdam photos,  since i’ve been back it’s all work. Little sleep, some eats, some kisses.
Last night, from high up, I saw the sunset reflect and bounce off from under the wings of seagulls.

And Ellen linked to this, which could very well be the best thing I have seen all month:

Atom_Robert Henke & Christopher Bauder

While looking for the crazy moving balls sculpture I saw today , and stumbled across this amazing performance made of balloons light and sounds.

I’m really excited about it.

Lately I’ve been cooking a lot and feeling good about our apartment. Buying flowers, white sheets and things from the brocante. Having People over. Sitting. or,
Watching the Dylan movie with sleepy cats and a sleepy Zachary.

+ These things exist too
+ About the Atom performance:

Performance for a matrix of 64 gas balloons, lights, and sound by Christopher Bauder & Robert Henke (aka Monolake)
A room is filled with deep, evolving noises from a four-channel sound system. An eight-by-eight array of white, self-illuminated spheres floats in space like the atoms of a complex molecule.
Through variable positioning and illumination of each atom, a dynamic display sculpture comes into being, composed of physical objects, patterns of light, and synchronous rhythmic and textural sonic events. Change, sound, and movement converge into a larger form.
The height of the helium balloons is adjusted with a computer-controlled cable, whilst the internal illumination is accomplished using dimmable super-bright LEDs, creating a pixel in a warped 8×8 spatial matrix.
The sonic events, the patterns of light, and the movement of the balloons are manipulated in real time as a 45-60 minute-long performance.

Yona Friedman

Filed under: Design, art, dream — Lisa Paclet @ 3:22 am

I am getting more and more excited about Yona Friedman’s ideas of space. I need to read more.

Here are some questions from the first of his “Manuels”, questioning the the role of architecture in shaping city, regions and nature:

1_ La region qu’est que c’est?

2_ Ou commences la ville?

3_ It’s your town know how to protect it

4_ The city also belongs to the child

5_ Si nous ne  conservons pas la nature la nature ne nous conservera pas

PURE CINEMA IS WHAT I BELIVE IN

Filed under: Interests, art, dream — Lisa Paclet @ 8:11 am

Last night i dreamed that i was feeding a tiny black bird a big wasabi pea. He would eat it all in one gulp and then become a round ball with little eyes.

AND

PURE CINEMA IS WHAT I BELIEVE IN:

Pure Cinema is the film theory that a movie maker can create a more emotionally intense experience using autonomous film techniques, as opposed to using stories, characters, or actors.

Unlike nearly all other fare offered via celluloid, pure cinema rejects the link and the character traits of artistic predecessors such as literature or theatre. Rather than seeing film as part of an evolutionary continuum, it declares cinema to be its own unique art form that should not borrow from any other. As such, “pure cinema” is made up of nonstory, noncharacter films that convey abstract emotional experiences through unique cinematic devices such as montage (the Kuleshov Effect), camera movement and camera angles, sound-visual relationships, super-impositions and other optical effects, and visual composition.

There you have it. Love it or leave it alone.
